上海市第一人民医院建于1864年3月1日，时称Shanghai General Hospital，为全国当时规模最大的西医医院，也是全国建院最早的西医综合性医院之一。1877年更名为公济医院，1953年改名为上海市立第一人民医院， 1981年成为上海市红十字医院，2002年加冠上海交通大学附属第一人民医院。1992年通过国家卫生部评审，成为全国首批三级甲等综合性医院。医院连续24年十二次保持上海市文明单位称号，1990年以来分别荣获全国百佳医院、全国卫生系统先进单位、全国创建精神文明先进单位、全国医德建设活动先进单位、全国医院文化建设先进单位等。
医院分设北部（虹口区海宁路100号）和南部（松江区新松江路650号）。占地294,775平方米，是目前市内占地面积最大的医院。全院在编职工2771人，其中高级职称511人，硕士以上学历650人。核定床位数1580张，实际开放床位2000余张，设临床医技科室48个。2011年门急诊317万人次，出院病人7万余人次，手术病人5.47万余人次。
148年来，市一医院在国内、市内卫生系统中一直处于领先地位。医院名医荟萃，在上世纪中后叶汇集了诸如著名专家乐文照、任廷桂、胡懋廉、沈成武、尤彭熙、陈宏达、林元英、赵东生、夏理彬、薛兆圣、龚闽珠、张镜人、张友梅、丁果、颜和昌、蔡小荪、黄正、黄羡明、谢桐、胡远峰、黄硕麟、张皙、庄心良、唐孝达、肖明第教授等国内著名医学人才，在医学上创出了众多国内第一：如第一例肝叶切除、第一例足趾移植再造拇指、第一例针麻手术、第一台国产心向量图描记器研制、首个国产心脏临时起搏器样机研制等业绩，为我国医学事业的发展、为上海人民的健康做出了很大的贡献。
改革开放30多年来，医院在学科建设和人才培养等诸多方面取得新的进展。近年来，先后获准建立了上海市器官移植临床医学中心、上海市视觉复明临床医学中心、上海市心脏病急救中心和上海市创伤急救中心。我院是上海市麻醉质控中心、上海市肝移植质控中心。我院还设立了上海市眼科研究所、上海市眼底病重点实验室、上海市胰腺疾病重点实验室等19个研究机构。此外，上海交通大学泌尿外科研究所、上海交通大学医学院胰腺疾病研究所、上海市卫生局示范中医科也设在我院。
医院的医、教、研技术实力雄厚，成果丰硕。肾移植存活率接近欧美先进国家水平，“肾移植组织配型”达到国际先进水平，获得国家科技进步二等奖；视网膜疾病的临床研究处于国内领先水平，“糖尿病性视网膜病变临床防治及发病机制研究与应用”课题获国家科学技术进步奖二等奖；肝脏移植质量处于国内先进水平，其相关成果获上海市科技进步一等奖；泌尿外科创建铥激光剥橘式前列腺切除术治疗良性前列腺增生症得到国际F1000点评的高度评价，获上海市科技进步一等奖，中华医学科技进步二等奖。 2003年1月我院施行了亚洲首例成人胰岛细胞移植并获成功。2000年4月一例心脏移植手术，成为本市心脏移植存活时间最长者。2009年成功救治了上海市首例甲型H1N1流重症病人，充分体现了上海医务人员的智慧和水平。此外，我院妇科肿瘤、咽喉及头颈部肿瘤的外科治疗，重症急性胰腺炎、重症肺部感染的救治，冠心病的介入治疗和心律失常射频消融治疗，骨髓干细胞移植治疗血液系统疾病，血液净化治疗，创伤及脊柱外科，糖尿病胰岛移植及综合治疗以及肿瘤相关基础研究等均处于国内先进水平。
近年来，市一医院人才梯队建设和科研教育成效显著。现有博导45名，硕导85名，博士点及博士后流动站22个，硕士点33个。先后获国家科技进步奖2项，市部级科技奖30项，市部级以上科研项目近400项，其中国家级课题126项，市部级课题133项。多人次获得国家杰出青年科学基金、海外青年学者合作研究基金、新世纪百千万人培养计划、上海市百人计划、上海市领军人才计划等。
2011年获国家自然科学基金42项；获科技部“重大新药创制” 科技重大专项1项，上海市科委项目31项。获上海市科学技术奖、教育部高等学校科技进步奖、中华医学科技奖、上海医学奖等7项奖项。医院获得各类渠道的科研项目219项，科研经费总计7051万元；发表统计源期刊论文530篇，其中SCI收录论文140篇。首次在《Nature Medicine》发表原创性研究论文。

Founded on March 1, 1864, Shanghai First Peoples Hospital was not only the largest western medicine hospital in China at that time, but also one of the earliest general western medicine hospitals in China, and was called Shanghai General Hospital at that time. It was renamed as Gong Ji Hospital in 1877, Shanghai Municipal First Peoples Hospital in 1953, and added a title of Shanghai Red Cross Hospital in 1981, and was entitled as the First Peoples Hospital Affiliated to Shanghai Jiao Tong University in 2002. It was evaluated as the first batch of Class A tertiary general hospitals by the Ministry of Health of the People’s Republic of China in 1992. It was awarded as the civilized unit in Shanghai and has kept this title for 24 consecutive years. Since 1990, it has been respectively honored as one of the 100 best hospitals in China, advanced unit in the health system of China, advanced unit of spiritual civilization in China, advanced unit in the construction of medical ethics in China and advanced unit of hospital cultural construction in China etc.
Divided into north region (No. 100 Haining Road, Hongkou District) and south region (No. 650 New Songjiang Road, Songjiang District), the Hospital occupies a land area of 294,775 square meters, and is one of the hospitals with the largest floor area in Shanghai at present. Throughout the Hospital, there is 2771 permanent staff, including 511 staff with senior professional title and 650 staff with Master’s Degree or higher; 1580 approved sickbeds, more than 2000 practically open sickbeds; and 48 departments of clinical/medical technology. In 2011, there were 3,170,000 outpatients, more than 70,000 inpatients, and more than 54,700 surgical patients.
For 148 years, it has always been in the leading position in national and local health system. Especially in the middle and late 20th century, famous doctors gathered together in our Hospital, including the famous expert Le Wenzhao, Ren Tinggui, Hu Maolian, Shen Chengwu, You Pengxi, Chen Hongda, Lin Yuanying, Zhao Dongsheng, Xia Libin, Xue Zhaosheng, Gong Minzhu, Zhang Jingren, Zhang Youmei, Ding Guo, Yan Hechang, Cai Xiaosun ,Huang Zheng, Huang Xianming，Hu Yuanfeng,Xie tong,Tang Xiaoda, Zhuang Xingliang,Xiao Mingdi, Zhang Xi,Huang Shuolin and other leading medical personnel, and created numerous first achievements in medical science in China: for example, the first hepatectomy, the first thumb reconstruction through toe transplantation, the first operation under acupuncture anesthesia , researching and manufacturing the first domestic vectorcardiograph and the first prototype of domestic temporary cardiac pacemaker China-made vectorcardiogram machine and so on, which made very great contribution to the medical development in China and human health in Shanghai.
Since the reform and opening up for more than 30 years, the Hospital has made new progress in subject development and personnel training. In recent years, It is successively approved to establish Shanghai Organ Transplantation Clinical Medical Center, Shanghai Clinical Medicine Center for Vision Rehabilitation, Shanghai Heart Disease Emergency Center and Shanghai Trauma Emergency Center. It is the Shanghai Anesthesia Quality Control Centre and Shanghai Liver Transplantation Quality Control Center. It has also established 19 research institutes such as the Shanghai Ophthalmic Research Institute, Key Laboratory for Ocular Fundus Disease in Shanghai, Key Laboratory for Pancreatic Disease in Shanghai and so on. In addition, Urology Research institute of Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Pancreatic Disease Research Institute of Shanghai Jiao Tong University and Demonstrative TCM Department of Shanghai Health Bureau are also located in the Hospital.
Our medicine, teaching and research have powerful technical strength and plentiful achievements. the survival rate of renal transplantation is close to that of the European and American advanced countries, “the tissue matching for renal transplantation” has achieved the advanced international level, and won the second prize for national science and technology progress; the subject “Clinical Control and Pathogenesis Research of Diabetic Retinitis and the Application” in our Ophthalmic Department also won the second prize for national science and technology progress; the quality of the liver transplantation is advanced in China ,and has won the second prize for science and technology progress in Shanghai. the thulium laser resection of prostate-tangerine technique created by the Department of Urology to treat the benign prostatic hyperplasia has been highly evaluated and praised by the International Faulty of 1000 Medicine (F1000), won the first prize for science and technology progress in Shanghai and the second prize for medical science and technology progress in China. in January 2003, we successfully implemented the first adult islet cell transplantation in Asia. In April 2000, a heart transplant recipient became the one with the longest survival time after heart transplant in Shanghai. In 2009, we successfully cured the first serious patient with H1N1 in Shanghai,which fully reflecting the wisdom and level of medical personnel in Shanghai. In addition, the surgical treatment of gynecological tumor, throat, head and neck neoplasm, treatment of severe acute pancreatitis and severe pulmonary infection, interventional therapy of coronary artery disease, radiofrequency catheter ablation of arrhythmia, bone marrow stem cells transplantation for the treatment of hematological disease, blood purification treatment, wound and spinal surgery, islet transplantation and comprehensive treatment of diabetes and tumor-related fundamental research and so on are all advanced in China.
In recent years, we have achieved significant achievements in personnel echelon construction and scientific research education. At present, we have 45 Dr. advisers, 85 Master’s instructors, 22 doctoral programmes and postdoctoral mobile research stations, and 33 Master’s programmes. Over the recent ten years, we have successively won 2 prizes for national science and technology progress, 30 city-ministry-level science and technology prizes, and nearly 400 city-ministry-level or higher scientific research projects, including 126 state-level subjects and 133 city-ministry-level subjects. We have won the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, Joint Research Fund for Overseas Natural Science of China and Training Plan for Millions of Talents in the New Century and so on.
In 2011, 42 projects of our hospital were supported by the National Natural Science Foundation of China, including 1 project of international cooperation and exchange; we also won 1 significant and special technical project “Creation of Significant New Drugs” of the Ministry of Technology, and 31 projects of Science and Technology Commission of Shanghai Municipality. We have won 7 prizes such as the prize for science and technology progress in Shanghai, prize for science and technology progress in colleges and universities of the Ministry of Education, science and technology prize in Chinese medicine, and prize in medicine of Shanghai and so on. We have won 219 scientific research projects in various channels, and the scientific research fund amounts to 70.51 million Yuan; and have published 530 papers in Journals of Statistic Source, 140 papers were collected in SCI. We have first published creative research papers in Nature Medicine.
